Windows Update / Outlook Crashing, Black/Blinki...
Last post by James - November 12, 2015, 12:26:08 PM
Symptoms:

  • When viewing a HTML email that includes pictures, Outlook crashes.
  • Hitting CTRL+ALT+DEL to log into a system causes it to go to a black screen.
  • The display blinks or goes black when using a touch screen monitor

Resolution:

The problem is related to an update on 11/11/2015 from Microsoft: Security Update for Microsoft Windows (KB3097877)

  • Log into the computer using an administrative account.
  • Open Windows Update and View Update History
  • Click on Installed Updates
  • Search for: KB3097877
  • Uninstall the update, and restart the computer.

If you are not able to log into the computer you can try the following steps:

  • Use a working computer to remote connect to the system with the issues.
  • If a touch screen monitor is connected, disconnect the USB for the touchscreen. This should resolve the black screen at login so you can log in.
  • If the touchscreen is built in, try to disable it through BIOS, which should then allow you to log into Windows to remove the update.
  • If a remote connection will not get you connected, boot the computer into the Windows Recovery Environment and restore the system to an earlier point.

Windows 10 / Windows 10 - DefaultUser0
Last post by James - August 28, 2015, 11:55:52 AM
During the initial profile account creation, Windows 10 will fail causing it to create a 'DefaultUser0' account which requires a password that; is not supplied, and unable to be reset.

To fix the issue without having to restore the computer, create a new user using the Administrator account in 'Safe Mode with Command Prompt':

  • From the user sign in screen, while holding SHIFT, click the power button in the lower right, and click reset.
  • This will bring you to the Windows 10 boot options
  • Select Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Startup Settings > Restart
  • After restart, select '6)Enable Safe Mode with Command Prompt'
  • If prompted, select the 'Administrator' account
  • Create a new user account: net user <username> <user password> /add
  • Exit, and restart the computer. You should now be prompted to create a new user through the Windows 10 creation process, or you will be prompted to log in as your newly created user.

After logging in as your newly created user, you can manually remove the 'DefaultUser0' account using the following method.

  • Delete the 'DefaultUser0' folder from C:\Users\
  • Delete the 'DefaultUser0' registry entry from: HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\
  • Click on each of the listed profiles and check the 'ProfielImagePath' entry to verify the associated profile
